ABOUT MARK EVANS-MARTIN
A lifetime of movement. A continuing pursuit of understanding.
Former Royal Marine, Retained Firefighter, Personal Trainer, Metabolic Analyst and lifelong advocate for health, fitness and human performance.
MY STORY
Fitness has always been part of my life.
Fitness and wellbeing have been part of my life for decades.
From a young age I discovered the power of physical activity. The adrenaline, the challenge and the sense of achievement. That early passion led me into a career that has taken me from the Royal Marines and the Fire Service to gyms, professional sport and personal training.
Over the years I’ve worked with people from all walks of life, helping them achieve goals ranging from weight management and general health to strength, conditioning and high-level performance.
From training people to understanding people.
For many years I worked in the traditional world of fitness — resistance training, cardiovascular exercise, conditioning, weight management and personal coaching. Over time, my interest moved increasingly towards the physiology behind performance. I became particularly interested in heart-rate monitoring and training intensity, including how measured physiological responses could be used to make exercise more individual rather than relying solely on generic formulas.
My work has also included the development of technology for professional rugby and heart-rate education programmes designed to help people better understand training intensity and cardiovascular response. That continual search for better information eventually led me into the study of human metabolism.

Why Metabolic Analysis?
The more I worked in fitness the more I wanted to understand why different people respond so differently to the same exercise, eating plan or training programme. This led me to study human metabolism and qualify as a Metabolic Analyst in 2020. I now use the PNOÉ portable breath analysis system to measure how your body actually responds at rest and during exercise.
Rather than beginning with assumptions, we can measure aspects of physiology such as resting metabolism, oxygen utilisation, cardiovascular fitness, ventilatory thresholds, fuel utilisation and metabolic response to exercise. This provides clear, objective data that we can interpret and turn into actical, personalised training strategies and, where appropriate, PNOĒ-informed nutrition guidance.
That information can then be interpreted alongside body composition, lifestyle, activity levels, sleep, recovery, nutrition habits and, most importantly, what the individual actually wants to achieve.
That philosophy has become the foundation of Intelligent Trainer.

Guidance for nutrition and training
“Accept that the road to your goal is not a straight one, but be determined to achieve what — and who — you really want to be.”
MY APPROACH
I don't believe in generic plans or quick fixes. Everyone is different — your metabolism, your lifestyle, your goals and your starting point are unique.
My role is to help you understand where you are now, what the data means, and how we can use it to create a realistic, effective and sustainable plan.
Whether your goal is better health, improved fitness, weight management, healthy ageing or high-level performance the process always starts with understanding you.
My approach combines three things that have developed throughout my career:
Experience. Measurement. Coaching.
Experience helps me understand people.
Measurement helps us understand physiology.
Coaching helps turn that information into something useful in everyday life.
I don't believe that handing somebody a report full of numbers is enough. The real value comes from explaining what those numbers mean, identifying the few things most likely to make a meaningful difference, and then helping someone act on them.
“
Discipline is not a punishment; it is the core of your success.

More Than Performance
Although metabolic testing has obvious applications for athletes, runners, cyclists and specialist occupations, my work is about helping everyday people improve their health, fitness and quality of life.

Still moving forward.
My work is built on experience, shaped by measurement and guided by the belief that better health, fitness and wellbeing begin with understanding the person in front of you.
Over time, that belief has developed into an approach that combines practical coaching, physiological insight and a clear focus on what matters most to each individual.
Whether the goal is improved health, better fitness, sustainable weight management, healthy ageing or higher performance, the starting point is always the same: understand where you are now, then build the right path forward.
